Brighton Grade II Listed Cottage

The owner of this charming cottage purchased it as a second home to be closer to family in a picturesque village near Brighton. With a passion for displaying his collection of fine artwork and antique furniture, he envisioned transforming the property into a welcoming and characterful retreat. However, the cottage presented significant challenges, including a state of disrepair, damp issues, and a deteriorating roof structure, compounded by its listed status.

Elizabeth, with her extensive expertise in period properties and conservation, was entrusted with the complete renovation and project management of the property. The work involved substantial structural changes, such as installing a new roof, adding a skylight above the staircase, and creating vaulted ceilings in select bedrooms. Throughout the process, Elizabeth liaised with the local council to secure the necessary listed building consents, ensuring all renovations respected the property’s heritage.

The cottage was stripped back to its original framework, with its character thoughtfully reinstated. New marble and vintage herringbone flooring were introduced, and the decaying roof beams were carefully restored and cosmetically integrated into the vaulted ceilings.

Elizabeth designed a bespoke kitchen with elegant curved detailing, including a unique kitchen island, perfectly blending functionality and style. In addition, a custom bed for the small single bedroom and a large fitted wardrobe were crafted to harmonize with the antique furniture. Rustic joinery was also designed to match the original doors, creating an interior that feels timeless and authentic.

To bring warmth and vibrancy to the space, Elizabeth selected colorful traditional fabrics for cushions, curtains, and blinds, complementing the cottage’s rustic charm. Antique rugs were sourced for the ground floor, while a bespoke stair runner, crafted from two antique Persian rugs, became a striking focal point in the entrance hall.

This ongoing project showcases Elizabeth’s dedication to craftsmanship and design excellence, blending modern functionality with historical charm to create a truly unique and inviting home. More photos will be available upon completion.
